First published in Oak Tree Journal in 2023 (thanks, Ralph Pennel!), “The Pearl” follows a woman who mourns the recent death of her grandmother through a series of objects left to her, one that opens up a space of reflection about her que_er identity and relation to her family. I wrote this story after my grandma died a few years ago, and while “The Pearl” is entirely a work of fiction, for me, it’s tightly bound up with that work of mourning.
